AS9100D: what the certificate on our wall actually means

Aerospace quality is more than a badge. Here is what an AS9100D audit looks at, and why every customer benefits.

Every aerospace supplier's wall carries the same set of certificates. AS9100D is usually the largest of them. It is easy to treat it as a badge — a ticket to bid on aerospace work — but the standard shapes the whole way a supplier operates, and the practical consequences reach far beyond the aerospace customer base.

Here is what AS9100D actually requires, what an audit really examines, and why non-aerospace customers benefit from buying from a supplier who holds it.

What AS9100D is, in one paragraph

AS9100D is the aerospace industry's quality management standard, published by the International Aerospace Quality Group and adopted worldwide by primes, tier-one suppliers and their supply chains. It is built on ISO 9001 — every ISO 9001 clause is inside it — and it adds the specific controls the aerospace sector has learned it needs: risk-based thinking applied to every process, formal configuration control, first-article inspection, counterfeit-parts prevention, foreign object debris (FOD) control, product safety, and mandatory traceability from raw material to shipped part.

What an audit actually examines

The common misconception is that a quality audit is a paperwork exercise: the auditor asks to see your documented procedures, ticks them off, and leaves. That is not how it works.

A modern AS9100 audit is what auditors call a "process approach". The auditor picks a live job — often a job in progress at that moment — and follows it. Purchase order in from the customer. Contract review. Bill-of-materials generation. Supplier orders. Incoming inspection. Route card. Mould setup. In-process inspection. Final inspection. Packing. Dispatch. Certificate of conformance.

At every one of those steps, the auditor is not asking "do you have a procedure?" They are asking "did what actually happened match what your procedure says should happen?" Every deviation, however innocent, is a finding.

That is a demanding regime to work under, and it is deliberately so. Aerospace parts fly. A component that leaked into the fleet because a shift changed and nobody wrote down the mould temperature is not an academic problem.

Why non-aerospace customers benefit

A shop set up to satisfy AS9100 does not operate two grades of process. The traceability discipline developed for an aerospace prime is the same discipline that produces a batch of medical silicone gaskets or a run of scientific instrument seals. The FOD controls that keep swarf out of a fuel-system seal keep swarf out of a food-processing gasket. The batch traceability that lets a customer recall by lot in an aerospace context lets the same customer investigate a field failure in an industrial context.

This is not marketing. It is a genuine operational consequence of holding the certification. A supplier who has been through the audit cycle knows how to handle configuration change, how to raise a concession, how to record a first article, how to keep a supplier scorecard and how to close out a corrective action. Those disciplines are useful to every customer, not just the aerospace one.

What we do because of it

The visible things: every batch carries a material certificate; every component has a recorded process route; inspection results are recorded, not remembered; non-conformances are formally investigated and closed out, not quietly reworked and forgotten.

The less-visible things matter more. Every process is owned by a named person with training records to support it. Every tool has a documented history — first article, subsequent samples, wear reports, refurbishment records. Every supplier we buy raw compound from is on an approved-supplier list with performance data. Every change to a customer's part, however small, triggers a configuration control review.

AS9100D versus ISO 9001, in practical terms

An ISO 9001-only supplier can be an excellent supplier. Plenty are. What they typically do not have is the aerospace-specific overlay: mandatory FAIR to AS9102, mandatory counterfeit parts controls, mandatory product safety, mandatory risk management applied to individual processes rather than the business as a whole. Whether you need those controls depends on your industry — but the marginal cost of buying from a supplier who has them anyway is usually nil.

What the auditor is actually looking for

Auditors want to see three things above the paperwork: that the leadership team understands its own quality system; that the people on the shop floor understand it too, in their own words; and that when something has gone wrong recently — a customer complaint, a scrapped batch, a late delivery — there is a documented investigation and a genuine corrective action, not an "operator error, retrained" line entry that closes the ticket without changing anything.

That last one is the tell. A quality system that only produces "operator error" root causes is a quality system that is not learning.

The point

Certification is not a plaque. It is a way of working that shapes the day-to-day decisions of everyone in the business — from the operator who fills in the route card to the director who signs off the annual management review. If it is doing its job, you can feel it in the way an order is handled. If it is not, no amount of paperwork will hide it for long.
